San Fermin Festival Pamplona 2009.
Me and some of my bravest pals donned the white uniform complete with red neckerchief for possibly one of the craziest things I’ve ever done – the annual running of the bulls.
Partly hungover and with eyes stinging from the fake ‘snow in a can’ that had leeched into our eyes during the partying the day before, we lined the narrow streets of Pamplona crushed like baked beans in a tin and nervously awaiting the moment we’d have to literally run for our lives…
As the beans were gradually ushered forwards into a slow march there was as much anxiety about getting crushed by the sheer numbers of people as the anxiety and anticipation of the bulls.
Then, the cannons echoed in our ears.
The Bulls were on route.
The march became a frantic sprint, people were searching in their droves for nooks and crannies, climbing lampposts and scaling walls in an effort to find safety.
But, so was everyone else, there was no safe haven!
What looked like an easy out was just false hope as droves of runners blindly followed each other into dead ends.
I turned, and in a street barely the width of a car, 10 gigantic bulls were bearing down on us. I like to think of myself as a bit of a man’s man but I have to say, in that moment, I shit my pants…
I remember my mate Chris said after, he’s never seen fear in my eyes before but when I turned he knew what I had just seen and that made it worse…
And run like the wind we did!
We survived, we high fived, hugged and celebrated.
It’s amazing what you can achieve when you’re faced with no alternative.
So what’s the point in Paolo’s little recant today?
Well lemme tell thee squire…
The pressure of January ‘New year, New me’ fitness goals and weight loss is bearing down on us just like bulls in Pamplona, there is no escaping that fact, it’s happening.
And that’s ok…
It’s a perfect time, motivation levels are high. The back end of last year (not just Christmas) saw every stitch of clothing put to their limits. Right now, in that lull between Christmas and New Year the body feels kinda like a crash test dummy might do after hitting a wall at 100mph but with an extra 2 stone fat bumper pack.
Drastic times call for drastic measures so most people will scramble and follow each other blindly for the quick fixes – low carb, low fat, low calorie, LOW MORAL…
Only, just like the nooks and crannies in Pamplona, they don’t provide any real security or substance they are dead ends.
Have you ever considered these quick ‘fixes’ could be the very reason you binge?
There have been some interesting links made between the amount of diets attempted and the amount of weight gained, worth thinking about when choosing your next approach…
It’s not easy!
But right now is a great time to take the bull by the horns <— had to get that one in…
If you didn’t achieve what you set out to last time then – DON”T DO THE SAME THING AGAIN AND EXPECT A DIFFERENT OUTCOME even getting somewhere then falling back means it didn’t work, it was unsustainable, you were just pretending to be different without actually doing the work to make it stick…
Doing too much of the wrong thing.
That’s what I see so often as more and more people fail at their latest fad diet or unrealistic fitness plan and the motivation levels quickly drop after the initial burst…
(most people have countless stories of this happening over and over)
That’s where we can help!
Achieving your target means applying a proven, sustainable system, daily! Not only until you achieve your goal, but for life – so it makes sense that the system needs to fit your life.
Implementing these changes is difficult when the ‘get up and go’ motivational spirit has lapsed, and it will…
But, being part of a team and working with coaches to keep doing the daily work and build these positive lifestyle changes into your life helps you to stay focussed with the system, not only until you achieve what you set out to, but long after that!
We tend to work a bit differently to most fitness companies so I’d like to know a bit more about you before we carry on. If you wouldn’t mind clicking the link below and answering the questions that can help me to help you.
