“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster”
One of my favourite films of all time, Goodfellas.
It’s all about the the rise and fall of Henry Hill
and the Lucchese mafia family of Brooklyn.
And you know there’s a lesson to be found in there.
He spends his early adult years during the 60’s and 70’s
enjoying being a ‘local celebrity’.
Every night at the Copacabana club,
funding an extravagant life of partying and womanising
with robbery and murder.
He does what he has to do to afford ‘the life’.
***Spoiler alert*** and the lesson for thee…
As a viewer you find yourself wanting to be a gangster
almost idolising the lifestyle.
For a gangster it seems that normal rules don’t apply
and we dismiss any evil doings as ‘necessary’.
Got me to thinking of how we dismiss being fat
and zombie like as ‘necessary’ evils to live a life with no rules
eating and drinking whatever takes our fancy
kidding ourselves that the normal rules of excess don’t apply to us
In the end Henry turned to drugs
he went against the wishes of the mafia boss Paulie,
to feed his hunger and inevitably a hit was put out on him.
A liability to himself and all he loved.
Ignoring all the signs he was losing control until,
the only way out was death or the FBI.
The witness protection programme was his only option.
A whole new identity.
Living by different rules that were designed to keep him alive
Kind of like us, ain’t it chaci?
Doing what we have to do to live a
self indulgent and destructive existence.
Ignoring all the signs that our body is screaming for help
constant fatigue, puffy skin and clothes that don’t fit.
A misery to be around grouchy and depressed
full of anger and hate.
Always trying to be the local celebrity on Flakebook
A slave to our vices.
Stuck in a life that doesn’t serve us or anyone around us
and the only way to save our life is to hit the reset button,
“Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut”
Become a dirty rat and join the ‘fitness protection programme’.
Start a fresh.
Live by some rules, a code to keep you feeling alive and free
Design the life that serves you instead of destroying you.
But remember: If you rat you can never go back!
