Yep it’s true Paul ‘Tough’ Love is doing weight watchers! After over 10 years studying nutrition and behavioural habits of literally 1000’s of people and spending every spare penny I had studying with the best in the business I have come to the conclusion that Weight Watchers calorie control method was right all along!
Did anyone detect a hint of sarcasm there?
Just to clarify, in case sarcasm is lost on you, I won’t be doing Weight Watchers!
But I was thinking about all the different diets and the amount of times I hear people talking about their abs and their weight. Have you ever noticed that the people who have the most problems with their weight are perpetually ‘DOING’ a diet?
The 5:2 Diet/Intermittent Fasting
Raw Food Diet
The list goes on, millions of people go on a diet each year. At any given time, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men are on some sort of diet. Surveys have found that by the time women are 45 that on average they have been on 61 diets!!
I should be singing the praises of a dieting nation who are all happy with their shape but I find myself cringing when I hear the dreaded phrase ‘I’m doing (insert any diet plan here)’
The problem is that all of these diets will be successful!
Why is that a problem Paolo?
Well I’m glad you asked. Let me tell you…
The very simple fact is that all of these diets, even though on their own as stand alone nutritional practices are all flawed, have two very strong factors working in their favour, they are;
a) more structured than the ‘eat what you want when you want’ diet plan you were following before and,
b) something entirely different than that same amazingly modern plan causing upregulation of many receptors (imagine receptors as internal body operating systems in the case for most westerners they have varying receptors that have burnt out from being left on for too long. A new diet stimulus means new input and new operating systems being used giving the old burnt out ones time to recover)
It is common knowledge amongst trainers that have any grounding in nutrition at all that simply by changing up your eating habits from one method to another (especially if you were on the ‘couldn’t give a shit’ plan) that your weight and or circumferential measurements are going to drop rapidly for the first 10 days and will continue to drop at a slightly slower rate for a further 2-3 weeks!
Let me fill you in on a little secret, I’m not gonna be very popular for doing this but it gets my point across.
Let’s call it the ‘Bootcamp Guarantee Swindle’
Iron clad 100% money back guarantee
Double your money if you don’t drop a clothes size
Heard any of these before?
Of course you have!
I used to be one of the ones shouting it with uber confidence.
Of course you will drop a clothes size or two and x amount of weight but whether or not it is fat and whether or not it is sustainable depends on a myriad of other factors all of which are extremely important and a matter for another post that I will be writing soon. The bonus to the bootcamp solution, is that they have the added benefit that some exercise is part of the programme and that exercise is structured and periodised – one would hope!
Let’s just say that, for the main stream diets, it is a really good business plan if your product works when someone is using it BUT makes them worse than before when they aren’t!!!
Ever heard the phrase ‘I’m going back on Slimming World?’
The problem with a little bit of knowledge and a diet plan like any of the above is the belief that it was that specific diet that had worked and not understanding the fact that it was, just as mentioned before,
a) a more structured eating plan than the ‘eat what you want when you want’ diet plan you were following before and,
b) something entirely different.
It is logical then to assume that if you dropped the desired number on the scales that continuing to follow that diet will continue to get further reduction even after the honeymoon period.
BUT remember to assume makes an Ass out of U and Me!
Warning: Prolonged periods of time on most of the above diet plans will cause hormonal imbalances, reduced metabolic rate and compromised behavioural changes that will all have a negative effect on your dream body!
Might as well shoot you now eh?
Don’t worry though. It’s not all doom and gloom!
The reason that not one particular diet has all the answers for everyone (IMAGINE THE MONEY YOU WOULD MAKE IF YOU HAD A DIET THAT DID!) is that not one person is the same. Every human organism has different environmental and physiological factors that change the way they should approach nutrition.
Armed with a little bit of knowledge about inflammation, digestion, stress and recovery you can build a diet that works with your lifestyle
If getting strong and lean is your dream then keep an eye out as I will be sending you some killer info so you can build your own personal health plan that takes into account the fact that you are human,, that your body will adapt and especially that you have a social life!

Ps. I’m thinking about posting my workouts and nutrition as of the 16th September for 12 weeks, as I strip some timber from my post holiday frame. More on this to follow 😉
